Pleased to announce the Speaker Information for the Saturday night, February 15th 2014, Wasatch Splitfest event at Canyon Inn:
Utah Avalanche Center forecaster (and splitboard inventor) Brett Kobernik will be giving a talk on the current state of the Wasatch snowpack. We are in the midst of a significantly touchy snowpack at present. Brett will recap our season history and share his insights. Come educate yourself about what we are dealing with out there.
Snowboard Ambassador Kyle Miller will be giving a talk on his remarkable American Alps Traverse. During the first half of June 2013, Kyle completed this 120-mile splitboard traverse of the crest of the North and Central Cascades with partner Jason Hummel. Come hear Mr. Miller regale us with tales of this unprecedented linkup of several classic traverses.
Splitboarding meteorology student and powder aficionado Matt Jeglum will present “What Makes a Place Get a Lot of Snow?” Matt will provide his thoughts on why locations like Japan, British Columbia, and our beloved Wasatch tend to be particularly favored by the white nectar. He’ll also share some observations on the relationship between avalanche activity and the last snowfall.
We will get the presentations started at 7 PM, and wrap them up by a bit after 8PM. By 8:30 we will get into our Raffle/Auction, and be finished up around 9PM with the ceremonies.
The Raffle/Auction will consist of a couple splitboards from Voile and Chimera, outerwear from Arc’teryx and Eddie Bauer, layers from Patagonia, a set of custom Afterburners by Spark R&D, gloves from local outfit Hand Out Gloves, rope from Imlay Canyon Gear, and more! Attendance is free. The Canyon Inn is a bar with drinks and cheap eats. You can buy raffle tickets and bid on the Silent Auction starting at 7PM. All raffle and auction proceeds go to the Utah Avalanche Center.

Boxes are starting to arrive and Imlay Canyon Gear has the fastest turn time ever. The Wasatch Splitfest contacted Imlay on December 12th and a box arrived on December 18th. It looks like a Canyon Fire 8.3 rope and a the Scuttlebutt will be part of the Wasatch Splitfest Utah Avalanche Center fundraiser. I know a lot of you splitters hit the canyons in the summer and know how tough the Colorado Plateau is on gear. This stuff will hold up for the job. If you haven’t done any canyoneering and wondering what it is, check out the Zion Canyoneering book. You can find it on the Imlay site http://www.imlaycanyongear.com/ Stay tuned, we have also received boxes from Patagonia, Venture Snowboards, and Eddie Bauer. I also know Chimera Snowboards is up to something but they haven’t released the details yet.

Splitters, I wanted to let you know about a new supporter of the Wasatach Splitfest. This company is based out of Mount Carmel right next to Zion National Park, makes specialized gear for extraordinary places, and has been a long time supporter of the Utah Avalanche Center…you guessed it, Imlay Canyon Gear. Before Imlay Canyon Gear, the stuff you needed for canyoneering was virtually non-existent. Think about what you were doing before Spark R&D or Phantom Splitboard Bindings, this is what canyoneers were doing before Imlay Canyon Gear. Now it is hard to imagine not having the specialized equipment that Imlay Canyon Gear makes. Rumor has it that there will be some ropes that will work great for the occasional mandatory ski rappel and some canyoneering specific items. When the box arrives I will get some photos. While you are waiting, go check out the Imlay Canyon Gear facebook page and website. http://www.imlaycanyongear.com/gear.php

Here is a bit that came out a few months ago via Kronicle magazine highlighting the founder of Chimera Snowboards who also happens to be a Wasatch Splitfest supporter. Yes Chimera is supporting the Wastach Splitfest this year. Details are sparse and I will let you know as they unfold. For now click the photo to give the article a read and check out their facebook page for the latest news. Their website http://chimerasnowboards.com/ has all the juicy details on the Chimera lineup.
